A unicorn among Porsches: The Ferrari yellow 993 GT2 Clubsport

A true unicorn, the Porsche 993 GT2 Clubsport is a rare gem in the automotive world. Only 20 units were ever made, and only seven are known to exist today. Among these, this is the only one painted in Ferrari Yellow and the only one that has ever been spotted on our site - twice in Monaco and once, for the first time, in Switzerland.

The GT2 was the hardcore, race-focused version of the 993 Turbo, utilizing essentially the same 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged engine, but with slight modifications that increased its power output. The car was specifically designed to compete in the FIA GT2 racing class. Within the already exclusive circle of 57 cars, there is an even more rare subset: 20 of the 57 road-legal cars were produced in a second - and final - batch with upgraded engine power 450 hp, known as the GT2 “Clubsport.” These are among the last Porsche models with air-cooled engines.

The GT2 Clubsport featured a substantial front splitter, similar to that on the Carrera RS Clubsport, to improve airflow around the front of the car, while the large adjustable rear spoiler had gaping inlets on the sides that forced air into the engine for better breathing. To make the GT2 a class winner, Porsche took the 993 911 Turbo and lightened the chassis and body by over 200 kilograms, stripping away almost every creature comfort as well as the heavy all-wheel-drive components. Thinner glass was used for the windscreen, and the bonnet and doors were made from aluminum. At the same time, power from the 3.6-liter engine was increased to 450 hp by boosting the peak pressure of the KKK K24 turbochargers to 0.9 bar. The results of this power increase and weight reduction are impressive: a 0-100 km/h time of around 4 seconds and a top speed of 296 km/h.

However, the GT2 was as much about handling as it was about outright speed. Each example is easily recognizable by its bolt-on flared wings, which allowed engineers to redesign the suspension geometry with a much wider track and use significantly wider lightweight Speedline wheels (235/40 ZR 18 front and 285/35 ZR 18 rear). The massive increase in mechanical grip was further enhanced by an aerodynamic package that included a revised front splitter and a large rear wing to generate extra downforce.

Clubsport-specified cars took things even further with the addition of a welded roll cage, six-point racing harnesses, a battery cut-off switch, a full fire extinguishing system, and bucket seats. The overall potency of the package was confirmed by an impeccable race pedigree, including two class wins at Le Mans and numerous successes in the hands of privateers across Europe, America, and the rest of the world.
