Aston Martin DB4: Classic elegance spotted in Switzerland

Switzerland in a nutshell: Rainy, cold, and gloomy weather, with some regions already seeing snow. Nonetheless, spotter Auto-Moto0611 discovered a wonderful Aston Martin DB4 Convertible in Gstaad, which had traveled all the way from Belgium. This is only the 12th time the Aston Martin DB4 Convertible has been spotted on our site and only the 10th distinct car to be featured. Out of the total DB4 production run of 1,110 cars, only 70 were convertibles. Of these, 30 belonged to the Series IV, and the remaining 40 were from the Series V.

DB4 Aston Martin

Aston Martin began work on the DB4 in 1956, alongside the development of the DB Mark III. The key figures in the creation of the DB4 were General Manager John Wyer, Chassis Designer Harold Beach, and Engine Designer Tadek Marek. Every major component of the DB4 was newly developed. The four-seater body was designed by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan, employing their 'Superleggera' construction method, which involved fixing aluminum panels to a tubular frame built onto a robust platform chassis.

A new era

The new DB4 was unveiled at the London Motor Show in 1958, sharing the stage with the DB Mark III, which continued in production for nearly another year. The DB4 was the first production car capable of accelerating from 0 to 160 km/h and back to 0 in under 30 seconds, reaching 160 km/h in 21 seconds. The iconic DB4 marked a new era for Aston Martin, bringing the company back into competition with other high-performance sports car manufacturers.

Convertible version

A DB4 Convertible was introduced at the London Motor Show in 1961. Throughout its production run, the DB4 lineup was gradually enhanced, with the addition of a GT version and several significant model year changes (often referred to as Series 2, 3, 4, and 5) before being succeeded by the DB5.
